Post lockdown, many people whom I have known for years have tied the knot. The last month felt like a month of marriages, with people sharing their candid pictures of their marriage or engagement ceremonies.

Indeed, I am happy for newlyweds, but at the same time, It makes me wonder, are they really happy or just pretending? The premise behind this thought is, in our culture, as soon as we enter into our glorious age of 20s, thoughts of getting children married start playing in the minds of parents, round and round, especially for their girl child.

After listening to an aunt, sharing her plan of mortgaging her land to take a loan for her daughter’s marriage, a plethora of thoughts struck into my mind, “are we(especially girls)born just to get married?” “ Can’t we enjoy our liberty to make our imagination a reality”? “ Are we nothing but a burden on our families?”

I am sure these thought-provoking thoughts must be a continuous passerby to all girls, who can’t help but let their families pay a heavy dowry!
